This is the work that changes how a house looks from the road. New beds shaped to the front of the property, the right plants in the right amount of sun, a crisp edge, and fresh mulch to tie it together.

Design here is practical, not theoretical. We look at the light, the drainage and how much upkeep you actually want to take on, then choose plants that will still look right in five years — not ones that outgrow the bed in two seasons and have to be ripped out.

What's included

Everything under landscape design and planting

Landscape Design: Planning and designing outdoor spaces, combining plants, trees, beds, borders and other elements into something attractive and practical. We walk the property with you and design around how you use it.
Planting: Installing flowers, shrubs, trees and other plants according to the needs of the space and the design. Planted at the right depth, in amended soil, and watered in — the reason plants fail in their first year is almost always the installation.
Mulching: Installing mulch around trees, plants and beds to hold moisture, protect roots and finish the look of the landscape. We offer black, brown and natural hardwood, laid at the right depth and kept off the trunks.
Edging: Cutting and maintaining defined borders around beds, trees, sidewalks and lawn areas for a clean, professional finish that keeps mulch where it belongs.
Sod Installation: Laying sod for an instant lawn where seed will not establish — new construction, deep shade, erosion-prone slopes, or areas that took damage during a project.

Landscape Design and Planting: common questions

How often should mulch be replaced?

Once a year for most properties, usually in spring. Rather than piling new mulch on top of old every year, we turn or remove the old layer first — mulch built up too deep around trunks holds water against the bark and rots it.

Do you charge for the design?

No. We come out, look at the property, talk through what you want and give you a plan with a price. You only pay for the work if you decide to go ahead.

What plants work well here?

It depends on the sun and drainage in your particular yard, which is why we look first. In general we lean on plants proven in Northern Virginia's clay and humidity and stay away from anything that needs babying to survive a local summer.
